A Page of Madness has no intertitles at all, telling its story entirely through Teinosuke Kinugasa's rapid-fire editing, double exposures, and expressionist staging, a technique closer to European avant-garde cinema than anything else being made in Japan at the time. The film was believed lost for over 40 years until Kinugasa found a surviving print in his own storehouse in 1971. It remains one of the only widely available windows into 1920s Japanese avant-garde film, a movement almost entirely wiped out by the reels lost in the following decades.
