Conrad Veidt holds this single unbroken close-up for the better part of a minute, letting the kohl-rimmed eyes and painted-on shadows do all the acting — no cuts, no reaction shots, just Caligari's voice calling him out of the dark. It's one of the earliest horror films to trust stillness over movement to unsettle an audience.
