Erotikon

1920
Mauritz Stiller — Sweden — Romantic Comedy
A night at the theater

Erotikon is one of the great Continental sex comedies, a frank and witty film about an open marriage played for elegance rather than melodrama, made decades before Hollywood's Production Code would have allowed anything like it. Film historians widely credit it as a direct stylistic forerunner of what became known as the Lubitsch touch, the light, sly sophistication that Ernst Lubitsch later brought to Hollywood. Mauritz Stiller would shortly afterward discover and mentor a young Swedish actress named Greta Garbo, bringing her with him when he was hired away to America.
