Fantasmagorie is widely credited as the first fully animated cartoon ever made, extending this site's animation history further back than either Gertie the Dinosaur or The Cameraman's Revenge. Émile Cohl hand-drew roughly 700 images and filmed them in negative so the white chalk-like lines would read against a black background. He went on to make over 250 animated films between 1908 and 1923, though most are now lost.
