Fragmentos da Vida is a rare surviving glimpse of Brazil's late-1920s silent film scene; only about 40 minutes of the original release survives today. This shot captures São Paulo's building boom in real time, the same year the Martinelli Building was completed nearby as Latin America's first skyscraper. A contemporary review in Cinearte called it "the most daring portrait of Brazilian urban life," and decades later the Cinema Novo movement's 1962 manifesto cited it as an early precursor of Brazilian social realism.
