Exhibitors could splice this shot at the start of the reel or the end, and many chose the end so the film closed on it -- 1903 audiences reportedly screamed or ducked, since no one had ever been aimed at by a movie before. It's the moment film editing discovered it could touch the viewer, not just show them something, and it kicked off the Western as a genre in the same twelve minutes.
