Lon Chaney designed and applied this makeup himself, using wire to flare his nostrils and paint to hollow out his eyes and cheekbones. Universal kept the unmasked face out of all pre-release publicity specifically so 1925 audiences would see it for the first time in the theater, screaming right along with Christine.
