The Covered Wagon was the picture that proved the Western could be an event, not just a two-reel programmer. Paramount sent director James Cruze and a full production unit deep into Utah and Nevada to shoot with real wagon trains, real livestock, and hundreds of extras fording an actual river rather than a studio tank, and audiences in 1923 had never seen anything like it. It became one of the biggest box-office hits of the silent era and set the template every big-budget Western since, from Wagon Master to Red River, has followed.
