This was only the second Technicolor film ever made and the first Technicolor feature shot in Hollywood, and unlike the earlier The Gulf Between, which survives only in fragments, this one exists complete. It was also Anna May Wong's first leading role, taken at seventeen, on her way to becoming the first Chinese-American star Hollywood ever built around. The two-strip color process could only reproduce reds and greens, which is exactly why this garden setting, all jade robes and red roses, was chosen: it is a film built specifically to show off what the new color technology could do.
