White Zombie
1932The eyes in the wine
Bela Lugosi's eyes were double-exposed directly into the wine glass for this shot -- the first feature film built entirely around Haitian zombie folklore, sixteen years before the word reached Val Lewton or Romero. Legendre's poisoned toast and the stare that follows became the single image most associated with the movie, reprinted on posters long after the film itself nearly vanished from circulation.
